Gandhi in Joburg City
At The Maslow hotel in Sandton, there are 2 distinct types of guests: the business traveler with an eye for luxurious detail and the leisure traveler with an eye for luxurious detail. Whether travelling for business or pleasure, all guests at The Maslow Hotel enjoy the same luxury, world-class service and modern convenience of staying at one of the best located business hotels in Sandton.
Being one of the few hotels near Sandton Gautrain station, The Maslow is in fact near all of top Johannesburg tourist attractions. With the Gautrain zooming off to places such as Rosebank and Hatfield and Park Station in the city, there is no limit to the places to go in Johannesburg so long as you're equipped with a can-do attitude and a Gautrain ticket.
Did you know? Not only within walking distance to the Gautrain station, The Maslow is also nearby all the top investment banks, financial institutions and the mecca of shopping: Sandton City.
Starting from the excellent base of The Maslow, the list of places to go in Johannesburg is only limited by your spirit of adventure and the time that you have available. For business travelers or stop-over travelers this usually means that you're full-up on the imagination part but somewhat lacking when it comes to time. Fear not! Of all the places to go in Johannesburg (there are too many to mention) consider this afternoon trip that no guide book is likely to mention…
Often deemed a locals-only pleasure, secret Johannesburg monuments don't come better than life-sized statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Gandhi Square. Located in the Central Business District (CBD) of Johannesburg, Gandhi Square is a plaza just off the hustle and bustle of Rissik Street.
Originally known as the less catchy Van der Bijl Square or the more boring Government Square, the plaza was built in 1983. However, in 2002 the square underwent a transformation and was refurbished and gifted with a life-sized statue of Mahatma Gandhi, thus beginning the reign of Gandhi Square. Named in honour of the Indian political activist and pacifist who spent much time in South Africa, the square is only a few meters away from where Gandhi once had his legal offices. History buffs will also be interested to know that there is a particularly interesting blue plaque to be found at the square detailing the fascinating history of the location, but you won't get any clues here, you'll have to see for yourself!
Did you know? Mahatma Gandhi came to Johannesburg is 1903.
One of the most interesting Johannesburg tourist attractions, Gandhi Square is also a great afternoon trip as it is within walking distance of Carlton Centre. Described as a "mega shopping complex in the middle of the CBD" the Carlton Centre at 223 meters high is the tallest building in Africa. The Carlton Centre was once the tallest building in the southern hemisphere.
Don't forget to check out Ko'spotong, an institution found in the heart of Gandhi Square. Experience the hypnotic beats of South African house music and sip on a cool lager while you watch Johannesburg go by. Word is, if you stay long enough, you'll understand that Johannesburg isn't only known as the City of Gold because of the treasures beneath the ground. And remember: The Maslow is miles ahead of other business hotels in Sandton. Great for a quick check-in, check-out the city or a business trip with a difference.
