Take to Worcester for Trail Running
Possibly the most famous trail runner in the world, Kilian Jornet said: "For me, happiness is to get in touch with nature, with the mountain, making sport. So I run for that."
Those who are lucky enough to live in the abundant beauty of the Western Cape will agree that there's plenty of happiness to be found in the great outdoors. It's a nature-lover's paradise here, offering adventure activities to suit any level of fitness, and landscapes to suit any mood.
If you're in the mood for adventure, head to Worcester for The Meander Trail Run through the beautiful Breede River Valley.
What's great about these trail running Worcester events is the terrain: running through lush vineyards, fynbos and mountain streams, with good challenges that will test your mettle. Choose between the 10km and 20km routes, or do the family-friendly 3km route through the lemon trees. The start of the Meander Trail Run is a 30 minute drive from your Worcester accommodation at the Golden Valley Casino, which will give you plenty of time to amp up for muddy fun.
If you're a runner, you'll love trail running in Breede River Valley. Here's why:
- As far as trail running activities go, there are great options for newbies who just want to run in to enjoy nature, and there are also awesome technical challenges for the hardcore runners. Check out some routes online when you click here or get the mobile app when you click here.
- For non-technical runners, the jeep tracks here are plentiful and will take you through some great scenery on a Sunday morning jog. Some easy single tracks to follow can be found around the dams. Here, you'll start to feel like you're warming up before tackling the hills.
- There are many hills and many of them gentle. If you want something more challenging, there are some tough climbs that average around 2.5km. Runner's tip: leave your ego at home. It's okay to slow down and smell the roses (or in Worcester, the fynbos) and walk up that mountain instead of sprinting to the top.
- And then there are some terrifyingly technical descents on rocky trails too.
Tip: If you've taken it easy on the uphill, you'll be more rested and ready to push the downhill. Don't force your stride on the descent, but let gravity do all the work for you. And try not to break your hard earned pace, it'll fry your quads!
- The views are awesome, especially when you're top of the world with the town of Worcester and the casino complex below you.
