Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day has arrived and many are hoping their significant other will do something special for them. However, even the best-laid plans can go awry. Award-winning singer Kurt Darren shares his worst “day of love” experience

While they were dating, Kurt's wife, Dunay, planned what she thought would be a memorable Valentine's Day surprise at their Pretoria home. After going out for dinner, she disappeared for a while to set up the surprise.

"She kept inviting me to come upstairs, but I refused because I wanted to finish watching the MTV Awards on TV," says Kurt.

Dunay eventually left him to his show and went upstairs. "When I finally went up, I saw what she had been up to. She had created a path leading up to our room with rose petals. She had also placed candles and a love note on each step. But she was now fast asleep after waiting for me for hours."

Kurt says it took a while for Dunay to forgive him. "Let's just say she doesn't organise surprises for me anymore," he laughs. "What should have been a beautiful romantic evening was ruined because I wanted to watch TV."

The Loslappie singer has some advice for those planning a surprise for their significant other: "Valentine's Day may be just another day for you, but it can mean more for the person in your life. Even if it's something small, like a dinner or a show, make an effort to do something special."
