Miss South Africa

In 1956, the first official Miss South Africa pageant was staged as a platform to send a representative to the Miss World pageant. Fast forward to 2019, and South Africa has produced three Miss World winners (1958, 1974 and 2014) and three Miss Universe title-holders, the latest of whom was Zozibini Tunzi in 2019. Miss South Africa is not just a celebration of beauty. For over 60 years, the pageant has not only inspired millions of young women, but has changed the lives of those who have won the crown. As an ambassador for the country, Miss South Africa represents her country internationally while remaining committed to the cause she adopts during her reign.

From Sun City to Sun Arena

Sun International acquired full ownership of the Miss South Africa pageant in 2000 and went on to host its 10th pageant at Sun City. In 2018, Time Square's Sun Arena became the new home of the Miss South Africa pageant after almost 30 years of being hosted at the iconic Sun City Superbowl. In 2019, Sun International sold the rights to the pageant to Weil Entertainment but remains a sponsor.

Reigning with a Purpose

Every year, various communities stand to benefit from Miss South Africa's time as part of her commitment to making a difference. Over the pageant's 60-year history, the winners of Miss South Africa have taken on some inspiring initiatives. Miss South Africa 2019 Sasha-Lee Laurel Olivier will devote her time to #ItsNotYourFault campaign. As a survivor of rape and sexual abuse, Sasha-Lee's campaign is designed to support, inspire and help girls, boys, women and men who have survived sexual abuse.

A very deep sense of shame accompanies rape and long-term sexual abuse. Those who have suffered at the hands of predators and perpetrators feel responsible for their abuse and are profoundly ashamed of what is happening, or has happened, to them. We need to change the commonly held perception regarding this – the shame does not lie with the victim at all.

#ItsNotYourFault supports victims when they report the attack and, through a partnership with the Angel Network and Penny Stein, provide rape comfort kits at sexual abuse hot spots.
