The tradition of the Final Round

  • Media at the 2017 Nedbank Golf Challenge Final Round

To play the Gary Player Country Club at any time is a privilege. But to play it as the last round before the golf course is closed to the public ahead of the Nedbank Golf Challenge is one of the true privileges of “Africa’s Major”.

Every year, Sun International invites the South African golf media to Sun City to play the Gary Player Country Club in what is known as the Final Round.

It’s an opportunity for the media to experience the golf course as it nears its peak in terms of conditioning ahead of the Nedbank Golf Challenge, hosted by Gary Player.

They are able to experience the course in as close to the condition it will be when the European Tour’s finest professionals play it during the week of the tournament.

For the golf media, it remains one of the most important days of the year as they are also able to speak to Sun International’s Tournament Director Dan Sevel or Golf Director Ken Payet about the final preparations for the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

And this year Andy Stubbs, Director of International Policy for the European Tour, also attended and briefed the media on the player updates.

The Final Round is a longstanding tradition at the Nedbank Golf Challenge, and one of the more unique events in the global game.

But perhaps most significantly, it’s an opportunity for the golf media to once again reacquaint themselves with a golf course that – even for those privileged enough to play most of this country’s leading courses as part of their work – remains one of the most sought-after experiences.
